Unboxing and review of Creature Caster Emperor Dragon

Hi All!

This is to be another unboxing and review of a creature caster mini, this time we are looking at their Emperor dragon. This guy arrived with my Boreal Tree-walker since i got them together in a special pre-order bundle which is no longer available. Now like the Boreal Treewalker this arrived in some bubble wrap but nothing else as you can see below.

Unlike the boreal treewalker though which had a small fragile rope which broke in the shipping process this dragons components are all sufficiently robust that I would say this level of packaging is adequate. It could have come in a nice box with a bit of marketing fluff, especially given the price but it is what it is.

Packaging 6/10

Now onto the model itself, like the boreal treewalker this models details are very crisp and out of all the components only the wings, one of the heads and one claw had any visible mold lines. Now the kit itself comes with an alternate head (only one jaw) two pairs of horns (one for each head) two necks (armoured and unarmoured), additionally there is a howdah, a saddle or plain scales depending on what you prefer.

Once again like the boreal treewalker you are limited pose wise so you cant really make two distinct looking dragons if you bought two of the kits other than changing the heads really.

Reposibility 6/10

Now the sculpt itself i must say is absolutely gorgeous and apart from those few mold lines which were quickly dealt with using a modelling knife, there is little besides the standard cleanup which is necessary for all large resin miniatures (that is to say a warm water bath to remove the release agent, and using greenstuff to fill gaps). Honestly I am very impressed with this sculpt, its technically superb and the pose is dynamic and really gives you a sense of a roaring dragon.

Now the model is actually quite large standing at 11 inches tall from the base to the wing tip as you can see here, so for wargaming this fellow might be a bit difficult to transport if you glue the wings on as I am going to do. Still for my basilean army this guy will be a gorgeous centrepiece, my only conundrum is that there is no provided rider and so I must go looking for one somewhere (if you have any suggestions for a basilean dragon rider please reply in the comments below).

Sculpting and casting 9/10

Now price-wise he currently rests at 90 USD (80 EUR, 70 GBP or 120 AUD). Price wise I would say this is about average for a model of this size and which is expected to be a focus point for any army, still there are cheaper options out there.

Price 7/10

Summary

Ultimately this is a brilliant looking model which would look well at home on the table top for games of Kings of War, the 9th age or even just for a nice display miniature. The cast itself was of decent quality, slightly worse than the boreal tree-walker but overall still good. Price wise hes leaning a bit to the expensive side if you are on a budget and the packaging leaves something to be desired, but ultimately (and this is the important bit to me) hes a great sculpt and he came in good condition, requiring little clean up. If you are looking for a dragon miniature, honestly to me this guy is what a dragon should be and is to me one of the coolest dragons i now own (dont ask how many I own).

Overall score 8/10
